Shepherd Hut

4 guests | 2 beds | shared bathroom

Peaceful and secluded hut, surrounded by birch trees and fields with horses. A wood-burner inside and a fire bowl outside make this a cosy and rustic retreat.

Surrounded by nature

  • Natural environment

Tucked away in amongst birch trees and a couple of retired plum and apple trees, our hut offers a simple and natural environment in which to relax and unwind. This retreat is perfect for those who want to experience an alternative to glamping.

  • "disconnect..."

“What an absolutely idyllic hidden gem! The hut is small and basic, no TV, no wifi, no clocks - perfect and exactly what we were looking for! It's the ideal place to disconnect from technology and the stresses and demands of modern living. Days spent on site amongst the trees or strolling through the Downs, nights by the firepit...it doesn't get better than that!” — Aileen, Chichester

  • Comfortable beds

The king size bed is located on the mezzanine level and beneath it is a is a king size sofabed and pull out table for relaxing or writing. These huts were often used by shepherds during lambing season, offering protection from the elements and a warm space for sick or orphaned lambs.

  • "privacy..."

“Perfect weekend away to rest and be immersed in nature. Great location and offers good privacy. Just what we needed and would stay again in a heartbeat. I want to live there.” — Connor, Royal Wootton Bassett

  • Hand crafted

Our Shepherd Hut was designed and sustainably built at Westerlands by Adam at Wild Oak Carpentry together with our own resident artist Emma Jamison, using recycled wood and timber from locally managed woodlands.

  • Wood stove

A wood stove in the corner of the hut creates a rustic, romantic ambiance and provides efficient and direct heat, quickly warming up the space and keeping it cosy when it is cold outside.

  • "chickens..."

“`We had a wonderful 3 night stay in the shepherds hut. It's a cosy space in the most beautiful surroundings. Plenty of room for us and our 5 year old. Lovely walks straight from the door, chickens who visit and horses in the field. The views are just magic. ” — Kath, UK

  • "hammock..."

“We had a wonderful one night stay in the shepherds hut: a perfect escape with beautiful views and we loved relaxing in the hammock under the canopy of silver birches. The visiting chickens were a highlight for the boys!” — Claire, College Town

  • "woodpeckers..."

“Lovely location. Squirrels, rabbits, woodpeckers right outside of window. Cosy wood burner was lovely. My son particularly loved the hammock. So much so that I ordered two on amazon.” — Claire, Southampton

Outdoor shower

Our wooden outdoor shower (and sink) is located in a lovely spot not far from the Shepherd Hut and, as we have lots of piping hot water, it is available to use all year round. These facilities are shared with guests staying in the Nomad Yurt.

WildSpa

Our sauna and plunge pool guests also use these facilities twice a day:

Morning 10.30am to 12.30pm
Afternoon 2.30pm to 4.30pm

Dog friendly accommodation

We love dogs here at Westerlands however our Shepherd Hut is only really suitable for small dogs as there is no private garden and our chickens roam around outside and love to stop by for a visit.

We do ask guests to bring their own dog beds.

We support the SDNP Take the lead campaign which means keeping dogs on a lead when they leave the Cabin. This is for their own safety around farm machinery as well as the welfare of our animals and the abundance of wildlife here on the South Downs.

Bring your horse on holiday

Our stable yard is a few minutes walk from Shepherd Hut and this is where you can arrange turnout and stabling for your horse while you are staying with us. Please contact Cheryl for more information and prices.

You can also book additional horses for you and your guests to explore the South Downs. Rides can be booked at our Trekking Centre.
