Timber Country

4 guests | 2 beds | 1 bath

Designed and built at Westerlands, our brand new and innovative hide is the perfect off-grid retreat for wildlife lovers. Observe nature up close through big windows, relax to sights and sounds of nature in the outdoor bath, and enjoy the privacy and seclusion that this unique location offers.

Shhhhh… listen and watch for wildlife…

  • Horseshoe Field

Timber Country is located in Horseshoe Field near our re-wilding strip and hardworking beehives. Bees have recently been proven to calm the busy mind by humming at a pleasant C note, and we can confirm this does truly bring tranquillity! (Don’t worry though, they’re far enough away to not bother you!)

  • Off-grid heaven

Timber Country is fully self-sufficient running from only solar panels and gas. We have tried to make the property as eco-friendly as we can. This retreat is for those that are not quite ready to go camping, but want that same outdoor living feel to their stay.

  • Dining with a view

Full of light with stunning views over the fields and South Downs. Our breakfast bar has 4 barstools and a huge window where you can observe wildlife in comfort. This is a tranquil environment in which to relax and unwind amidst idyllic surroundings.

  • Hand crafted

Designed and sustainably built at Westerlands by Adam at Wild Oak Carpentry using soft wood cladding from locally managed woodlands, Timber Country is perfectly proportioned to maximise use of space and light.

  • Kitchenette

Simply furnished with quality fixtures and fittings. Everything you need is provided for an off-grid stay including a small gas ring and saucepans as well as BBQ utensils for cooking on the open fire outside.

  • Wood burning stove

A wood stove between the kitchen and the bathroom creates a cosy and rustic ambiance and provides efficient and direct heat, quickly warming up the space and keeping it cosy when it is cold outside.

  • Upstairs king bed

If you’re looking for the perfect place to switch off and get a good night’s sleep, this is it. Fall asleep and wake up to only the sounds of birds and other wildlife. Peace and quiet that only being truly off-grid can provide. Up here you will find the highest viewpoint from Timber Country, with a handy windowsill for placing night-time essentials.

  • Downstairs king sofa-bed

Below the sleeping area you can relax on our comfy sofa which coverts to an extra sleeping zone at night. This Cocoon Ottoman sofa-bed is made from recycled Coca-Cola bottles and is also king size.

  • Compost Loo

Exactly what you would expect when staying off-grid, our luxury compost loo is easy to use, sanitary, odour free, and eco-friendly. Water is not required, simply scoop and scatter some wood shavings when finished. For light in the evenings we provide a rechargeable handheld lamp and a torch.

  • Evenings outside

There is something special about gathering around a firepit in the evenings after a full day of activities and exploring. Stargazing sparks wonder and fascination, creating lasting memories. We have a rare “dark night sky” status so do bring your telescope or reserve one of ours for your stay.

  • Why Timber Country?

We chose to name Timber Country after a gold cup winning horse bred at Westerlands stud many years ago. His mother, Fall Aspen was owned by the Jamison family. You can see a video of Timber Country winning the 1994 Breeder’s Cup Juvenile.

Outdoor bath

A spectacular spot for an outdoor soak or waterfall shower and, as we have plenty of piping hot water, it is available to use all year round. Fairy lights make this space a magical place to relax and unwind.

If you dream of outside bathing with glorious views, in total privacy and seclusion, Timber Country delivers!

Dog friendly accommodation

We love dogs here at Westerlands!

We do ask guests to bring their own dog beds.

We support the SDNP Take the lead campaign which means keeping dogs on a lead when they leave the Timber Country field. This is for their own safety around farm machinery as well as the welfare of our animals - our chickens roam free - as well as the abundance of wildlife here on the South Downs.

Bring your horse on holiday

Our stable yard is a few minutes walk from Timber Country and this is where you can arrange turnout and stabling for your horse while you are staying with us.

Please contact Cheryl for more information and prices.

You can also book additional horses for you and your guests to explore the South Downs. Rides can be booked with our Equestrian Manager at our Trekking Centre.

We look forward to seeing you here soon
